What a sitemap is (and why it sells)

The blueprint before you build

A sitemap is a visual map of every page on the website and how they connect. It's the blueprint before you build β€” like an architect's floor plan before construction. You create it before touching any design tool.

A sitemap is also a sales tool. When you show a client a structured visual map of their site before a single thing is built, it signals professionalism, sets expectations, and locks in scope so you don't end up building 20 pages for a 5-page price.

Standard small business sitemap

  • Home
  • About (+ optional Team)
  • Services (with individual service pages)
  • Portfolio / Work (if applicable)
  • Blog (if applicable) + single post template
  • Contact
  • LegalPrivacy Policy, Terms of Service

Sitemap rules

  • Every site needs: Home, About, Services/Products, Contact
  • Every site needs: Privacy Policy (legally required if collecting any data, including email)
  • If the client has a blog: plan a blog index page + single post template
  • If eCommerce: add Shop, Product page, Cart, Checkout, Order Confirmation
  • Keep navigation to 5–7 items max β€” anything more overwhelms users

Tools for sitemaps

  • Whimsicalfast, free, clean flowcharts
  • Figmaif you're already designing there
  • Mirocollaborative, good for client review
  • Pen and paper works for simple sites β€” photo it and send it
operator note

always get client approval on the sitemap before moving to design or build. Changes at this stage cost you 10 minutes. Changes during build cost you hours.
